What to take when travelling?

Jennifer Lo Hair + Makeup Artist

So the season comes when we start looking forward to having a good old holiday abroad! Well, I guess some of you this may be any time of year now as winter sun is certainly very tempting.

If you are like me and have a plethora of cosmetic and beauty products that you love to use, or just enjoy having around to dip in and out of then this can become VERY tricky.

I recently had to go on a very last minute trip to Cyprus with only cabin baggage allowance….Horror!!

But…I took a deep breath and shrugged it off and packed last minute. Hahaha

I knew I would need to keep up the skin care regime out there as it is very hot, the sun is very close, I will be sweaty and grimy and I want to avoid sun damage to slow down any further wrinklage to my face.

I also knew that I would want some makeup with me, as I like options and to be able to perk myself up if I want to.

Skin care: I recently ordered this PWP set from Arbonne. You can only buy these miniature products with an existing order over a certain amount and Boy! am I glad I did. You get in the set the entire facial range but also the body firming cream and the Serum in lotion retexturising body cream too!

I didn’t take it all, as actually that would make it a very tight squeeze in the teeny tiny clear plastic bag you need to fit liquids into at airport security. So, I chose…

  1. RE9 Advanced Smoothing Facial Cleanser- to use in the shower or at the sink to clean my face and leave it smooth and silky.

  2. RE9 Advanced Intensive Renewal Serum- to use after said facial cleanse above to pack a punch into the dermal layers of my skin

  3. RE9 Advanced Corrective Eye Cream- use sparingly around the eye socket area after the above steps to correct any damage from the sun

  4. RE9 Advanced Restorative Day Cream with SPF 20!! whoop whoop… this is only for day time use.

  5. RE9 Advanced Firming Body Cream- I took this one instead of the serum in lotion one, as that causes more sensitivity in the sun as the serum contains AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) so I don’t want to increase my chances of burning in the sun. Please be aware of this ingredient!!!

I also took with me a miniature put of Meadow Calming Face masque that I slathered on my face at night after cleansing, as this is a very small potent pot of great for your skin oils. It really nourished and calmed my skin down every night.

Right onto makeup:

Makeup travel bag

Powders and stick products like a stick deodorant or the Milk Makeup sticks do NOT need to be put into the clear plastic bag for security. So i made sure I had some great multi tasking products with me for my travels.

  1. Sport FX Concealer in light and medium. These are highly pigmented (strong in colour) for a small tube. They go on really smoothly and you only need a tiny bit. I decided to take these because whilst in the sun you may get sweaty, and these are known to be great for that and where they are small you can pack 2 colours. You also do not really need a full face of makeup whilst on holiday as I feel that looks more natural and radiant. So these are great for just where you need coverage, blemishes, under eye, or mix in a bit with your day cream to combat any redness.

  2. Mini Arbonne It’s A Long Story Mascara. Miniatures are grrreat! As you can tell. It’s the perfect size for travel. This mascara is smudge proof but also easy to get off before bed. It does not irritate my eyes and is an all round great mascara.

  3. MILK Makeup Cooling Water stick. There are so many of these to choose from to suit your skin type but I know I get quite hot and oily, so I chose to bring this so I can hydrate and cool my skin, I even use it on the plane around my eye area to refresh myself and keep skin hydrated.

  4. MILK Makeup Lip + Cheek stick in Perk. This is a gorgeous coral pink tone. I loved it in the day and the evening as a blush and created such a fresh dewy look. Great that it doubles up as lip and cheek.

  5. Sport FX Finish liner. This does not budge even with a very hot face and eye lids. Great for creating dramatic lines for an evening or a little enhancement and smudge it in with shadow for a softer look.

  6. SPORT FX brow pencil. In black. Again this does not budge either. Fool proof plus has the spindle brush on one end to brush brows and lashes too if you need.

  7. NARS Cream foundation stick! Another stick! I threw this in bacause it was a stick and I used it a sparingly if at all.

  8. Hourglass Ambient Light Palette and Bronzer. As you may already know I am a HUGE fan of hourglass cosmetics. This little pink cased palette is a true joy. It has a mixture of highlighting, soft focus powders, bronzer and blush as well. They looked awesome! Also pretty shatter proof as I have dropped it a few times and they do not break.

  9. Anastasia Beverly Hills Soft Glam Palettes. one of my fave palettes to use so of course it had to come with me, great range of colours for eyeshadows but also has a great brown and black if I want a more defined brow or enhanced smokier eye.

  10. Arbonne Smoothed Over Lipstick in Magnolia. This is one of my favourite nude shades and ultra moisturising too. So I packed it!

Tools and brushes: I packed some makeup brushes and my hair brushes too for blow drying and my Shu Uemura eye lash curlers.

Hair Care:

I have got quite fine hair that I like to inject some body into. It has also recently been colour treated so I had to be careful being in the sun otherwise it could drastically go wrong and change colour! Green!!?

I used my Muji travel bottles to squeeze in some shampoo and conditioner by Davines Naturaltech Nourising Shampoo, and Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Conditioner (phew that was a mouthful!). These 2 help to restore my colour treated hair back to soft silkiness. I needed this as it is not drying and the sun was going to dry my hair out more anyway.

I also packed my little spray of Davines Naturaltech Enzyme Infusion Spray. This has transformed my hair, I also spritzed some on my hair in the day before going out as s bit of extra nourishment and protection.

I could not pack my favourite volume boosting product which is the Liquid Spell foam by Davines. SO I packed the Paul Mitchell extra body mousse. Which is fine for a short time just to help create some volume when blow drying.

All in all, 4 hair products.

Along with the beauty products above I also packed enough Arbonne Fizz Sticks in Pomegranate and Green Apple as a little pick me up whilst travelling and for daily consumption. Also the Arbonne Skin Conditioning Oil, great for dry areas, mixing in with other products, putting on my hair line and on cuticles and a Neal’s yard Relaxation Remedy roll on oil for the journey and for bed times to help aid with sleep.

Extra essentials

All in the security plastic bag!

I hope this helps you a little for when you are packing your carry on baggage essentials.

Just remember sticks, lip sticks (not glosses) stick deodorants, powder palettes do not have to go in the security bag.

If you have any travel packing tips you’s like to share with me I would love to hear them and hopefully use them too next time.

Best of luck and happy holidays!
