I love my ECO - Beauty Swaps!!
Jennifer Lo Hair + Makeup Artist
As some of you may or may not know ever since the beginning of my career as a hair and makeup artist back in 2007, I was always interested in looking for Cruelty Free, Vegan + Organic products. The amount of packaging that is wasted is quite incredible. Over time this has led to more of an Ethical, Eco + Sustainable approach to work and life where possible.
I have watched the industry change and new companies popping up who advocate for Ethical and Sustainable products and swaps. It can be daunting thinking of what to change and how it will fit in your life. So why not make a few small changes. I mean come on, we already take our own reusable shopping bags by now! How inconvenient did that feel to some of us at the beginning?!
Deodorant - I use a fabulous subscription based deodorant called WILD. They send you reusable refills for the outer casing, that you can choose in different colours. Read here for a more in depth review on my move to the We Are Wild refillable deodorant.
Moon Cups - So, I am terrible at remembering to replenish on things like tampons, and period pads etc and I feel they are a such waste to the environment. My lovely friend Lisa and fellow MUA, told me about moon cups. I have seen them before but just needed to hear how easy it was. Took a bit of getting used to but I bloody love them now. Saving the planet, saving my time in the shops, but also the pennies by not having to buy throwaway items. There are plenty available but I really enjoy these available at Bower Collective.
Shaving - So, I have to say I have not used this in a while. It’s been the winter season, lockdowns, I’m pretty much covered head to toe, and also single. I seriously joke that I might just not ever shave again, why do I need to!? Anyway, I had reverted to using a great safety razor that comes with refillable blades from Acala online. It’s super sharp so do take care but does a great job. Then you can recycle the blades as well. No plastic going to landfill due to our un-fuzzing vanity purposes! Hoorah!
Cotton buds + Cotton pads - Ok, so these are definitely a staple in our home and in my makeup artist kit. Cotton buds you can now get paper ones as well as wooden bamboo stick ones. Both are great. Cotton pads, I have now swapped to getting a few packs of reusable pads. Some are flannel and some are bamboo. They are not made from cotton in fact as some methods of how cotton is produced is quite damaging to the earth too. You wash them in the washing machine and hang to dry! I also soak them before in baking soda solution to get more grime out.
Soap bars - One of my most favourite swapsies. No more plastic bottles!! Obviously you can buy refills and pour them into lovely glass or plastic reusable bottles which also help save the planet. However I am really happy to say that me and the twins have moved over to soap bars. Our hair is healthier, cleaner, we are not putting any potentially toxic chemicals into our skin. Don’t forget a hot shower opens the pores even more. Read here for more info on how I swapped to using a shampoo bar, as it does take some patience. There are some awesome ones out there but my one I use is from Acala Online. It is green tea and Eucalyptus and leaves me with a lovely fresh feel. They do many others too so do have a little browse.
Anyway I will leave it at that for now with a picture of one of our lovely bunnies Misty- hopefully you will find it encouraging to maybe make some of those eco-swaps too. Do let me know what you do (or going to do) to help our planet as we continue striving to live a cleaner more sustainable life….
